I have so many more stories to tell but this one I had to add to my story. Grandmother had 28 milking cows and one bull. He was an ugly, mean animal and for some reason he didn't like us. I wonder why? We really didn't think too much of him either so when we entered the barn, we would go directly to his pen. He would be standing there, his head in the stanchion eating hay, then look up at us and we would catch the ring in his nose and pull on it. Well, to make a story short, he found us in the barn field and remembered us. He started to dig the ground with his front hooves and snorted. Janice and I looked at each other and up the hay stack we went. The bull was after us and knowing he meant business, we shouted for Dad to come. I told Janice that I would hang on to her on the other side of the stack and drop her, told her to run like the wind and have Dad come back for me. Just as I had a hold of her hanging in mid air, the Bull decided to change positions and came to where she was. I pulled her back up and then saw Dad coming towards us with a pitch fork in hand. Such a frightening experience for us and we never wanted to see this animal again. A lesson learned here, we now had respect for the animal.
We experienced so many things on Grandmother's farm, so many animals, always lots of baby kittens, puppies, baby calves. Electric fences surrounded the farm and of course we had to experience touching them. Zap, you didn't want to do this again. Sometimes we would take Grandpa for a walk and he would accidently touch the wire. He voiced his opinions in German. He did try to teach us some naughty words. He also prayed the Our Father everyday as he did not have much else to do. Such a tragic time for him, he missed so much because of the moonshine which took his eyesight and in the 30's the Feds saw his still in the field and smashed it the same as they did with the other farmers. This was illegal and everyone knew this but this was the 30's.
Janice and I found the quicksand that supposedly took a hired man's life. We tossed stones into the muddy area. We walked 10 acres to find a barn in a wooded area where a man hung himself. We don't know where these stories came from but we had to investigate them. So many stories I could write about; we were girls that played hard, wanted so much to see what nature had to offer, we lived it, we loved it and with these stories I hold all these memories in my heart and mind. |
